Pair Side table by David Thulstrup for Møbel Copenhagen

The Pair side table series, designed by David Thulstrup for Danish furniture studio Møbel Copenhagen, consists of a solid ceramic piece, handcrafted from clay, and an overlapping metal piece. The combination creates a strong contrast of solid materials, colours and surfaces. With two interacting objects, Pair side table offers multiple setting and styling opportunities. Pair is available in three sizes and six colourways.

Pair side table consists of two tables. One is a compact lower base inspired by a ceramic pot and uniquely handcrafted from clay. The other is a higher overlapping table with a refined look. The overlap creates storage on the base table. If desired, the base table can also be placed beside the higher table. This provides an additional surface. Each of the pairs differentiates in height and diameter, appealing to different settings and uses.

The side tables come in four different colours, neutral and vivid, that are customizable throughout the line. The high gloss finish adds an extravagant feel to the table collection. This makes them both smooth to touch. And also intensifies the colour.

A strong contrast of solid Materials, Colours and Surfaces

“The Pair is a flexible and customisable table which differs from the generic idea of a standalone lounge table. I wanted to create a dynamic and playful pair of tables that could either stand alone or be combined together in many different ways, while creating a strong contrast of solid materials, colours and surfaces. By designing two objects that could interact with each other (or not), I wanted to give to the user the possibility and the freedom of recreating different settings combinations.”

David Thulstrup, creative director and founder of Studio David Thulstrup.

The two paired tables are made respectively of ceramic and metal. These are two different and honest materials which work unexpectedly well together. The soft and glossy ceramic creates an interesting contrast with the cold matt metal. The void of one attracts the plain of the other, as if they were co-dependent objects meant to be together. The base table can be placed either beside the higher table, providing an additional surface. Alternatively, it can be placed to create storage in between.

“Ceramic is a natural material which allows me to go back to old production techniques and to stick to my idea of honest design. By using natural minerals, such as clay, I wanted to create a beautiful and minimalistic, yet sustainable product. Each ceramic piece is uniquely handcrafted and the glazing – which creates a glossy irregular surface – guarantees a limitless combination of textures and surfaces with an appealing graphical effect.”
