Max Lawrence, Ok Sure, Osopho – “Eternal” via WHTVR

After playing a show together in Melbourne, electronica soothsayers Ok Sure and Osopho reached out to avant-pop oddity Max Lawrence with a composition of volcanic bass synth modulations, hypnotic pads and pulsing rhythms, sparking Lawrence to write the soaring yet brittle vocals that are painted all over ‘Eternal’.

“I was thinking a lot about artificial intelligence, and how if these programs are simply cognitive, what if they were also emotional? What would it feel like for senses and emotion to be suddenly switched on for an AI? Without being taught how to self-soothe, I imagine experiencing such sudden emotional heights would be incredibly overwhelming. It’s also a very personal song and concept. I feel like I oscillate between phases of machine-like unfeeling behaviour and then into states of complete emotio-sensory surrender and feel everything all at once, and this contrast feels very human.”

Max Lawrence

Lawrence’s voice sounds like it’s being torn apart by tendrils of light reaching out in the darkness; an almost parasitic force is capturing the soul’s attention, promising togetherness but delivering isolation. Parallels can be drawn with how mesmerised we are by our devices, our life force being captured at all times in this digital paralysis.

Possessed by a light outside of frame

Accompanying the track is a bewitching music video in which Lawrence is utterly possessed by a light outside of frame, which augments their form beyond recognition as they stare, losing themselves. It’s distant and otherworldly yet incredibly real. A face lit up in the darkness. A familiar image.

In addition to the original track, there will be an extended mix and a remix by Ok Sure, expanding the world of ‘Eternal’ further. The Ok Sure remix takes “Eternal” to a new level of exhilaration, cranking up the tempo and injecting a fresh burst of energy. With its chopped vocals, acid basslines and percussive drums it’s a playful take on the original and perfect for peak time dance floors.
