Das Minsk in Potsdamm: Louis Armstrong

In Potsdam zeigt DAS MINSK Kunsthaus mit I’VE SEEN THE WALL kommenden Herbst 2023 eine Ausstellung mit Fokus auf die legendäre Konzerttournee, die Louis Armstrong 1965 durch die DDR führte. Mitten im Kalten Krieg performte der afro-amerikanische Jazz-Musiker in Ost-Berlin, Leipzig, Magdeburg, Erfurt und Schwerin. Die Tour war mit 17 Konzerten in nur neun Tagen sehr eng getaktet. Die Hallen mit einer Kapazität von nicht weniger als 2.000 bis 3.000 Sitzplätzen waren schnell ausverkauft – etwa 45.000 Menschen erlebten Louis Armstrong und seine All Stars live in der DDR.

Dieser historische Moment ist Ausgangspunkt für die Ausstellung im MINSK Kunsthaus in Potsdam, die die Ambivalenz dieser offiziellen Einladung vor dem Hintergrund der Bürgerrechtsbewegung in den USA und dem Eisernen Vorhang in Europa untersucht. Zentrale Fragen in der Ausstellung sind: Was bedeutet es, durch die Welt zu touren und Unterdrückungssysteme und Diktaturen im Namen der Freiheit zu besuchen? Was bedeutet es, unterwegs wiederholt Anerkennung und zugleich Rassismus zu erleben und dann nach Hause zurückzukehren, um gleich wieder mit Rassismus konfrontiert zu werden?

Die Ausstellung I’VE SEEN THE WALL versammelt Gemälde, Fotografien, Archivmaterial und Installationen von Terry Adkins, Louis Armstrong, Pina Bausch, Romare Bearden, Peter Brötzmann, Volkhard Kühl, Norman Lewis, Glenn Ligon, Gordon Parks, Adrian Piper, Evelyn Richter, Lorna Simpson, Willi Sitte, Wadada Leo Smith, Andy Warhol, Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt und anderen. Der Filmemacher Darol Olu Kae (geb. 1984 in Los Angeles) produziert eine neue Filmarbeit, die DAS MINSK für die Ausstellung in Auftrag gegeben hat.

Hintergrund:

Das vierte WECHSELSPIEL stellt einem persönlichen Gegenstand von Louis Armstrong ein Werk von Andy Warhol gegenüber.
Die Ausstellung wird kuratiert von Paola Malavassi und Jason Moran. Die Ausstellung wird in enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Louis Armstrong House Museum (LAHM) in Corona, Queens, New York erarbeitet.

Dank an die Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation. Ko-Kurator der Ausstellung ist der Jazz-Pianist, Komponist und bildende Künstler Jason Moran. Er kuratiert auch die Dauerausstellung im neuen Louis Armstrong Center des LAHM, die im Sommer 2023 eröffnet wird.

Begleitend zur Ausstellung im MINSK erscheint im Hatje Cantz Verlag ein Katalog mit Essays von Tina Campt, Paola Malavassi und Jason Moran.

In Potsdam, DAS MINSK Kunsthaus will present the exhibition I’VE SEEN THE WALL in the fall of 2023, focusing on the legendary concert tour that led Louis Armstrong through the GDR in 1965. In the midst of the Cold War, the African American jazz musician performed in East Berlin, Leipzig, Magdeburg, Erfurt, and Schwerin. The tour was very tightly scheduled with 17 concerts in just nine days. The halls, with a capacity of no less than 2,000 to 3,000 seats, were quickly sold out—around 45,000 people experienced Louis Armstrong and his All Stars live in the GDR.

The exhibition at DAS MINSK takes this historic event as its starting point for an examination of the ambivalence of this official invitation against the backdrop of the civil rights movement in the United States and the Iron Curtain in Europe. One of the central questions in the exhibition is: What does it mean to tour the world, to visit oppressive systems and dictatorships in the name of freedom? What does it mean to repeatedly experience recognition and racism at the same time on the road and to return home to be confronted with racism all over again?

The exhibition I’VE SEEN THE WALL brings together paintings, photographs, archival material, and installations by Terry Adkins, Louis Armstrong, Pina Bausch, Romare Bearden, Peter Brötzmann, Volkhard Kühl, Norman Lewis, Glenn Ligon, Gordon Parks, Adrian Piper, Evelyn Richter, Lorna Simpson, Willi Sitte, Wadada Leo Smith, Andy Warhol, Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt and others. Filmmaker Darol Olu Kae (b. 1984 in Los Angeles) is producing a new film work commissioned by DAS MINSK for the exhibition.

Background:

In the fourth installment of the INTERPLAY series, a personal object by Louis Armstrong is juxtaposed with a work by Andy Warhol.
The exhibition is curated by Paola Malavassi and Jason Moran. The exhibition is created in close collaboration with the Louis Armstrong House Museum (LAHM) in Corona, Queens, New York. Thanks to the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation. The exhibition is co-curated by jazz pianist, composer, and visual artist Jason Moran, who will also curate the permanent exhibition in the LAHM’s new Louis Armstrong Center, which opens in summer 2023.

The exhibition at DAS MINSK is accompanied by a catalog published by Hatje Cantz Verlag with essays by Tina Campt, Paola Malavassi, and Jason Moran.
