    The 37th edition of Tanz im August, Berlin’s premier international festival of contemporary dance, returns this summer from 13 to 30 August 2025, under the artistic direction of Ricardo Carmona. With 20 productions across 9 venues, including 3 world premieres, 10 German premieres, and 5 Berlin and international co-productions, this year’s programme promises to be as multifaceted and vibrant as ever.

    A Festival in Motion

    The 2025 edition of Tanz im August unfolds like a tectonic landscape, with artistic encounters sparking new energy, igniting dialogue, and offering both warmth and orientation. The curatorial vision invites audiences to witness how dance traditions and identities shift and collide, reshaping the cultural terrain.

    Opening Night: Sparks Fly

    The festival sets the tone on opening night with the German premiere of “Derniers Feux” by Némo Flouret — a dazzling spectacle that fuses fireworks, dance, and music in a celebration of collective experience.

    Themes of Community and Identity

    This year’s programme centres on themes of community, identity, resistance, and transformation: Nora Chipaumire invites audiences into a fictional private bar, exploring spaces of revolution. Lia Rodrigues interrogates how borders shape human experience.

    J Neve Harrington crafts kaleidoscopic movement landscapes from bodies in motion. Clara Furey delves into the erotic as a norm-free collective power. Outbox Movement brings multiple dance styles into the open air.

    Tradition Meets Innovation

    Artists explore how traditional forms evolve through contemporary lenses: Inka Romaní blends Valencian folk dance with urban styles like Breaking and House. Nguyễn + Transitory reinterpret Thai traditions through a queer, experimental perspective. Adam Linder, with Ethan Braun and Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, examines the structural ties between dance and music.

    Radouan Mriziga investigates the desert as a cultural resonance space rooted in Amazigh heritage. Ligia Lewis and her company Culberg envision a utopian sense of belonging beyond borders.

    The Body as Archive

    Several artists examine the body as a vessel of history and identity: Marlene Monteiro Freitas spins a fable of 1001 stories encompassing love, war, and freedom. Daniel Mariblanca brings visibility to trans experiences through embodied narratives.

    Oona Doherty reflects on working-class memory and family history. Lovísa Ósk Gunnarsdóttir confronts the silences surrounding menopause and aging.

    Responding to a Changing World

    Dance also becomes a medium to address broader sociopolitical and existential questions: Moritz Ostruschnjak with tanzmainz explores how digitalisation reshapes human experience. Jeremy Nedd interrogates ownership in marginalized movement cultures. Xan Dye contemplates the paradox of identity and transformation.

    Yara Boustany highlights imagination as resistance in the face of destruction. Kim Sungyong, with the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, guides us into a metaphorical jungle where memory and metaphor intertwine.

    Beyond the Stage

    Tanz im August extends beyond performances, offering free public events such as:

    The festival also continues its Youth Ticket initiative, providing children and youth up to age 14 with access to four selected productions for only €5, when accompanied by an adult holding a full-price ticket.

    The Festival Centre at HAU2 (Hebbel am Ufer) will once again serve as the heart of the event — a meeting place for artists, audiences, and professionals. The recently renovated WAU Café reopens just in time for the festival, offering food and conversation daily and remaining open until 11:00 p.m. after shows.

    But this isn’t your typical speed-dating event. It’s not about romance — it’s about friendship. Because making new friends as an adult, especially in a foreign city, is tough. And yet, connection is more important than ever.

    No Awkward Games — Just Real Connections

    Held in the beautiful and usually off-limits Chapel at Bethanien, the evening is designed to make meeting new people fun and low-pressure. No cringey contests or forced mingling — just light conversation starters, playful games, and group activities that encourage meaningful connections. There’ll be time to chat, sip a drink, and maybe even dance.

    The event is being co-hosted with Candlelight Döner, who have curated the evening’s program with a distinct Berlin flair — thoughtful, creative, and welcoming.

    Part of a Bigger Conversation: The “No” Exhibition

    This one-night event is part of the broader “No” exhibition, which runs through July 6 in Berlin. Curated by Meduza, the exhibition explores how ordinary people resist and survive in extraordinary times, through contemporary art and documentary storytelling.

    Themes like polarization, loneliness, and solidarity run throughout the show — making this community-driven event a natural extension of its message.

    The exhibition has already drawn attention from Tagesspiegel, taz, Süddeutsche Zeitung, and The Berliner, and offers free admission. Curator-led tours in English are also available, along with a sharp, limited-edition merch collection.

    1991 führte Loren Carpenter ein Experiment durch, bei dem eine Menschenmenge als geschlossene Einheit das Videospiel Pong spielen konnte. Die Teilnehmer*innen wurden von einer Maschine gelenkt, die auf ihre Entscheidungen und ihren „unterbewussten Konsens“ reagierte. In der Performance zum Abschluss der Ausstellung Dilemma werden wir verschiedene Mechanismen kollektiver Entscheidungsfindung untersuchen.

    Demokratie ist in diesen Tagen wie ein wabbelnder Pudding — die Mehrheit gewinnt mit wenigen Stimmen, der Konsens ist fragil, und die Machthabenden untergraben die demokratischen Werte und gefährden das gesamte System. Wir laden euch ein, gemeinsam mit Gosia  Rätsel zu lösen und Entscheidungen zu Treffen.

    Der Verlauf der Erzählung richtet  sich nachdem Verhalten der Gruppe. Und denkt daran: Es gibt kein Zurück. Wir freuen uns darauf, euch dort zu sehen! Falls ihr jedoch zur Finissage verhindert seid: Unser letzter Ausstellungstag ist diesen Freitag, den 20. Juni, von 14–19 Uhr.

    In 1991, Loren Carpenter set an experiment, where a crowd of people could collectively play a video game Pong, as a cohesive entity. People were organised by a machine, which reacted to their decision-making and ‘subconscious consensus’. In the performance closing the ‘Dilemma’ exhibition, we will look into different mechanisms of collective decision-making.

    Democracy feels like a jiggly pudding these days – the majority wins with just a few votes, consensus is very fragile, and those in power undermine the democratic values threatening the whole system altogether. 

    We invite you to join Gosia in solving riddles and making choices. The narrative will unfold based on the group’s behaviour. And remember, there is no turning back.

    We are excited to see you there! If you can’t make it to the Finissage, our last opening day is this Friday, June 20, from 2–7 pm.

    Neue Perspektiven für die Alte Münze: ein wichtiger Schritt

    Langfristige Perspektive für die Alte Münze: Clubkultur erhält Raum und Sicherheit für kreative Entfaltung – ein starkes Zeichen für Berlin als Clubmetropole.

    Die Clubcommission Berlin, die zentrale Interessenvertretung der Berliner Clubkultur, begrüßt die Schaffung einer langfristigen Perspektive für die Betreiber:innen der Alten Münze. “Wir freuen uns sehr,” erklärte Emiko Gejic, Sprecherin der Clubcommission. Diejenigen, die jahrelang ihr Herzblut in die Alte Münze gesteckt und erhebliche Investitionen getätigt haben, können nun mit Planungssicherheit fortfahren. Sie müssen nicht mehr bangen, um ihre kulturelle Arbeit am Standort fortsetzen zu können.”

    In der Alten Münze findet seit Jahren ein vielfältiges kulturelles und clubkulturelles Programm statt. Ihre Sicherung ist ein wichtiges Zeichen für die Berliner Clubkultur. Dadurch wird sie gestärkt, um Berlin als Clubmetropole weltweit zu behaupten.

    Mission: in der Alten Münze ein Möglichkeitsraum erschaffen

    Mit der lang verhandelten Vereinbarung zur langfristigen Nutzung und Entwicklung der Alten Münze setzen die Spreewerkstätten zusammen mit der BIM – Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH ein klares Zeichen. Diese Vereinbarung steht für den Erhalt und die nachhaltige Entwicklung kultureller Räume in Berlin. Für die kommenden zwanzig Jahre haben die Spreewerkstätten als Betreiber sich verpflichtet, mindestens 18 Millionen Euro in den Ausbau, die Sanierung und den Betrieb des Areals zu investieren.

    Damit wird aus einem Ort der Zwischennutzung ein gesicherter Kulturstandort – im Herzen Berlins, mit offener Programmatik, Vielfalt und Freiraum für künstlerische und subkulturelle Ausdrucksformen.

    In einer Zeit, in der das Clubsterben in Berlin voranschreitet, geraten viele Räume der Clubkultur unter Druck. In der Alten Münze soll ein Möglichkeitsraum erschaffen und erhalten werden. Es wird ein lebendiger, zugänglicher Ort für Clubkultur und interdisziplinäre Kunst sein. Dort kann auch gemeinschaftliches Arbeiten stattfinden. Neue Formen von Musik, Kunst und Begegnung können entstehen – langfristig und verlässlich.

    kulturelle Vielfalt, soziale Offenheit und kreative Innovation

    Die Konditionen der Vereinbarung mit der BIM ergeben jährliche Zahlungen in Höhe von insgesamt 613.560,00 Euro, bestehend aus 229.560 Euro Pacht und 384.000 Euro Nebenkosten. Daraus resultiert eine kostendeckende Bewirtschaftung sowie die Möglichkeit, das Gelände und die Ausbauleistungen im Eigentum des Landes Berlin zu halten.

    Über eine vertraglich geregelte Mehrerlösbeteiligung geben die Spreewerkstätten etwaige wirtschaftliche Erfolge anteilig an das Land Berlin zurück – ein Modell, das kulturelles Wachstum mit städtischer Verantwortung verknüpft.

    Die Alte Münze steht für eine urbane Kulturentwicklung, die nicht verdrängt, sondern integriert. Sie bietet Raum für Clubnächte und Konzerte, künstlerische Experimente, Workshops, Festivals und unabhängige Projekte. Orte dieser Art sind unverzichtbar für eine Stadt, die kulturelle Vielfalt, soziale Offenheit und kreative Innovation ernst nimmt.

    Die Clubcommission ist das Netzwerk der Berliner Clubkultur. Sie wurde im Jahr 2001 gegründet und ist mit über 350 Mitglieder die weltweit größte Vereinigung von Clubbetreiber:innen und Veranstalter:innen. Sie unterstützt die Arbeit der Kulturunternehmer:innen durch die Optimierung der Rahmenbedingungen und die Verbesserung der Infrastruktur.

    Neben vielen verschiedenen Aktivitäten wie nachhaltiger Stadtentwicklung, Schallschutz, Vermittlung zwischen Clubs, Bauherren und der Nachbarschaft, Verbesserung der Arbeitsbedingungen in der Nachtökonomie und der Entwicklung von Antidiskriminierungs- und Sensibilisierungsmaßnahmen in Clubs, ist die Erforschung der verschiedenen Dimensionen der Clubkultur seit jeher ein wichtiger Bestandteil ihrer Arbeit.

    Exhibtion: Point of No Return – Michael Dohr

    Michael Dohr’s Point of No Return explores collapse, transformation & beauty through hybrid forms. Vernissage 11 June, Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery.

    A Tipping Point in Flesh and Form

    Mystical shapes, synthetic and bodily forms converge in the works of Austrian artist Michael Dohr, evoking systems and processes in flux – something being made or undone. Point of No Return, the title of the artist’s first solo exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, Berlin, references the idea of an irreversible tipping point, embodied in the recurring motif of a falling drop. Whether a teardrop, a leak, blood, rain, ink, industrial waste, the drop is a symbol of suspended consequence, beautiful and doomed. 

    This is work made in response to a world saturated with decisive moments: from the pandemic to the climate emergency, from a new geo-political situation to artificial intelligence, from synthetic biology to the metaverse. We know that collapse is coming, but the drop is yet to hit the ground.

    Suspended Consequences, Fragile Futures

    In this space of anticipation, Dohr doesn’t offer resolution or return, but invites us to consider what might come after the fall. The works suggest that within collapse, there may be the raw material for something new: forms of life and meaning not yet known.  

    Central to this investigation is a reimagining of the body as hybrid and adaptable, no longer a single entity but part of an evolving system. Dohr’s drawings, in particular, bring to mind bodily substance: red pastel marks evoke fleshy, fibrous materials and draw us into dense and chaotic spaces where branching structures resemble bones, tree roots, neural networks, tunnels or switchboards.

    We follow these lines in search of cohesion or clarity only for them to stutter, fade away or dissolve into dead ends. There’s a push and pull between structure and entropy, precision and collapse, with multiple iterations suggesting obsessive, almost desperate attempts at landing upon a solution. 

    In Stacks, a series of large-scale mixed-media works, this fragmentation becomes tactile. Torn canvases are layered with linen, cardboard and metal, suggesting both wreckage and repair. These works operate like puzzles with no fixed solution, embracing uncertainty and surprise. Dohr has described this process as a form of problem-making, allowing disparate elements to interact until they coalesce into a fragile logic. It is a process both intuitive and alchemical, echoing the chaos of a world in transformation.

    Matter, Memory, and Mutation

    Dohr draws on a wide variety of source material, spanning medical imagery, construction debris, plant life and geological strata, to create works that occupy an unsettling space between organic and inorganic, human and post-human.

    His Nest sculptures, for example, take inspiration from natural forms to conjure hybrid objects that appear at once mechanical and alive, vulnerable and threatening. Silicone interiors suggest bodily tissue or the pulp of a fruit. They resemble cavities where something has been removed or might soon emerge.
     
    Throughout the exhibition, there is a tension between surface and depth, symbols and matter, the flatness of code and the weight of flesh. Dohr is attuned to the metaphors encoded in materials: stains that speak of accidents, torn canvases that suggest rupture, drops that fall but never land.

    His works grapple with a world where the body is increasingly dislocated and yet remain rooted in physical experience, in texture and the insistence of form. In this way, Dohr offers a space where rupture makes room for strange beauty and reinvention.

This can also come out of nowhere, as was the case with David Bay and Small Black, who got in touch with the producer and it was an instant fit.

    ‘There are always those magical moments when a song comes out of nowhere. Once I had an idea for a chord sequence that I couldn’t get out of my head, but somehow that certain something was still missing. I then spontaneously asked a bassist friend of mine if he would like to play something to it – ten minutes later we had a hook that carried the whole piece. It’s these unexpected, spontaneous inspirations that make the process so exciting.’

    ‘Cruise Control’ is more than just another album from Satin Jackets. It is an invitation to enjoy the moment and surrender to the music – a soundtrack that creates a good mood and takes us on a relaxing journey. So just switch on the autopilot again, put on your headphones and let yourself go.

    The latest version of the guide will be presented on Wednesday, July 16th, 2025, from 6:30 PM at Micro (Via Tor De’ Conti, 21, Rome), a shop featuring illustrated prints, stationery, and design posters, as well as a pop-up space dedicated to creativity, in the heart of the Monti district, just steps from the Roman Forum.

    ROME LIST, created to celebrate MINT LIST’s over-a-decade-long experience in the field, reveals the city’s contemporary richness and its growing influence in the design scene, offering a fresh, authentic, and original perspective:

    The duo witnessed the rise of a local network of design-related businesses through their work in communications, and chose to establish their operational base here:

    “In 2016, Rome was an extremely fertile ground because our type of profession didn’t exist yet. We decided to bet on the city, thinking it would be a blank page—an opportunity to write together the story of contemporary Rome.”

    MINT LIST highlights the importance of networking and creating a comprehensive map of design and architecture sites in the capital. Offering alternative routes to the more traditional circuits, ROME LIST features 44 locations, including several new additions, divided into six categories: Relax, Marvel, Explore, Learn, Shop, and Taste.

    Rome Beyond the Monuments—Discover the Unexpected

    A new section includes a map linked to Google Maps, allowing easy access to galleries, ateliers, architectural sites, hotels, and restaurants selected based on the value of the project, architectural significance, and stories connected to the designers or owners. This new feature enhances the project’s exploratory potential, making ROME LIST a resource designed not only for architects and designers but also for tourists, locals, enthusiasts, and simply curious minds.

    Rhizome, SantoPalato, Fondazione D’ARC, OFFTAMAT, and the Palazzo Talìa are just a few of the new additions in the 2025 edition, joining others such as Dylan Tripp’s studio, La Rinascente in Piazza Fiume, Spazio Mala, and The Dome LUISS Guido Carli.

    Rome continues its evolution, becoming a significant influence on how professionals and businesses perceive it as an increasingly dynamic and diverse environment. The city is transforming into a magnetic hub for new initiatives, weaving a network of connections that gradually form a new fabric. Acting as a local creative engine, it significantly contributes to the capital’s growing presence.

    ROME LIST is much more than a just selection: it acts as an ambassador of awareness and promotion of architectural culture, encouraging greater attention to projects distinguished by the quality of their design, aligning with the agency’s broader vision of supporting the transformative power of design

    MINT LIST illustrates the city’s current state, moving in parallel with the involved entities and weaving the threads of its narrative. The ever-evolving project aims to shape the visual landscape of Rome, allowing the community to learn about and experience the urban space from a fresh and original perspective.

    Connecting People, Places, and Projects Through Design

    With texts curated by David Plaisant, Monocle’s correspondent in Rome, the list is available exclusively online on the MINT LIST website in a digital format, with annual updates.
