I really wish I could speak about the “threat” of the far-right or the “rise” of fascism, as if it were to happen in the future and we could still watch it from afar. Fascism has risen and it is no longer a threat, but a real time danger. For many people, especially those who are not directly targeted by fascist propaganda and policies, fascism is hardly noticeable. It creeps in people’s lives not in illusive ways, not what is commonly expected of authoritarianism.
Fascism is only tyranny and oppression for a few. For the rest, it feels like normalcy, safety and “actually not that bad after all.”The very first step to combatting fascism is to notice it.
Here are a few things to watch out for:
Notice how:
- …it is already getting more and more uncomfortable to openly say that AfD is a fascist, neonazi party.
- …Notice how facts are becoming less and less relevant, and the notion of truth is being blurred to the point that mere perception becomes reality.
- …critical voices are slowly disappearing from mainstream media, leaving only those who have chosen complacency over integrity, visibility over authenticity.
- …dissent is met with force. Peaceful protests and political opposition are labeled as threats to national security, and police or even military forces are used to silence critics (arresting or intimidating those who speak out), create fear (using violence to discourage opposition), and enforce conformity (making sure that any deviation from the official narrative is punished).
- …certain terms are becoming so vilified that they gradually disappear from daily language and merely seeing them written or hearing them triggers discomfort—or fear.
