The Master’s House

Twenty-six students from Muthesius Kunsthochschule Kiel, from Almut Linde’s Interdisciplinary Practice class and Andreas Greiner’s Media class, come to Berlin with The Master’s House, a group exhibition exploring the subtle mechanisms of structural and systemic violence, drawing on the work of Johan Galtung and Slavoj Žižek.

The title refers to Audre Lorde’s seminal 1979 statement, “The master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house,” which exposed how systems of power, privilege and exclusion can persist even within movements seeking equality. The exhibition expands Lorde’s metaphor into a broader examination of the largely invisible structures that shape everyday social conditions.

Across two floors and a courtyard, the students address gender-based power dynamics, psychological violence, migration and borders, refugee experiences, passports and belonging, class distinctions, bureaucracy, low-wage and care work, stigmatization and invisibility, as well as the commodification of plants and human and non-human bodies.

Through painting, sculpture, video, photography, installation and performance, the works make normalized forms of structural violence tangible. Rather than offering definitive solutions, the exhibition creates moments of disruption—“cracks,” in the words of Bayo Akomolafe—through which alternative realities and possibilities can become visible.
