Last weekend (4 to 6 October), SON Estrella Galicia Posidonia Festival returned to its roots in its eighth edition held on the island of Formentera, giving just 350 people a thrilling fusion of music, nature, gastronomy and positive impact.
The festival has been disrupting the status quo of the region with its philosophy and legacy, not only by its unique offering but by championing sustainable tourism and a commitment to the island. Adding to the fact that it has been zero emissions since 2021, this July it became the only festival in the world to achieve the TRUE Platinum certification as Zero Waste by the GBCI® (Green Business Certification Inc.)™.
Baiuca, 2manydjs, Kabeaushé & Roosevelt led the Line-Up
The secret line-up, revealed right at the start of the festival was lead by Baiuca, a musical phenomenon from Galicia that mixes the traditional music of his land with avant-garde electronica; 2manydjs, the project of the talented Belgian brothers David and Stephen Dewaele that has become a benchmark mixing diverse genres ranging from progressive rock to electronica; Kabeaushé, a Kenyan artist who performed delirious pop full of rawness and rave energy; and Roosevelt, a German singer and producer who is the standard-bearer of synthpop and retro electrónica.
Nubiyan Twist, Tulsa, Rocío Luna, Violeta Veinte, Júlia Colom, Branko, Faizal Mostrixx, Sonido Tupinamba, Flow Da Lou, Marco Holtman, Caste and Nat Ambiente completed this year’s lineup adding a different feel to the festival on previous years.
For the first time Friday’s live performances of Baiuca or Roosevelt took place in the Plaza de Sant Ferran opening them up to the public of the island. The gastronomic proposal combined Mediterranean flavours with a festival and informal format, paired with a different beer menu of Hijos de Rivera from Estrella Galicia Especial to the range of Cervezas 1906 or the new Lupia, made from Galician hops.
FORMENTERA AT THE CENTRE
Since the festival’s inception in 2017, the island of Formentera itself has been at the centre of the SON Estrella Galicia Posidonia proposal. The commitment has gone from strength to strength, promoting sustainable tourism and the protection of local ecosystems.
With a commitment to improve from edition to edition, the festival is the main contributor to the Save Posidonia project which exists to protect the Posidonia Oceanica. It allows the public to (re)discover its secret corners, its fauna, its flora, its culture, its flavours and its people through musical and guided walks around the island and activities such as beach cleaning so that attendees become aware of the importance of reducing and reusing.
In addition, its collaborations with local suppliers and producers generates a real positive impact that can be felt by its population. Created in collaboration with the Formentera Island Council, SON Estrella Galicia Posidonia is a tribute to an incomparable natural space that must be cared for and protected, as it deserves to be.
