Julien Creuzet @ Venice Biennale #24

,

The Artist Julien Creuzet, whose captivating commission Algorithm ocean true blood moves premiered at Performa Biennial 2023, is making waves once again as he embarks on a new endeavor: representing France at this year’s Venice Biennale. Creuzet insisted the project launch in Martinique, the French Antilles island of his upbringing, rather than in Paris. The artist announced his Venice commission on garden grounds with rich connections to his practice: the former home of philosopher Édouard Glissant whose theories have long threads through Creuzet’s art.

A nod to Négritude – the anticolonial movement founded by Glissant and his contemporaries in the 1930s – Creuzet’s site selection for his announcement speaks to his practice of intertwining personal narratives with histories of nationalization and displacement.  “There are also secrets in this work […] not everything is immediately perceptible or translated for the viewer,” writes Skye Arundhati Thomas for ArtReview‘s recent feature on the artist.
