Die BBA Gallery freut sich, Pixel Desires zu präsentieren – die erste Einzelausstellung des preisgekrönten Videokünstlers und Regisseurs Chris Kondek. Die Ausstellung markiert einen bedeutenden Moment. Darin überträgt Kondek seine langjährige Auseinandersetzung mit digitalen Systemen aus dem Theaterkontext in den bildnerischen Galerieraum.
PIXEL ALS PROTAGONIST
Pixel bleiben meist unbeachtet. In Pixel Desires macht Kondek sie zu den Hauptakteuren und untersucht, wie algorithmische Systeme unsere Wahrnehmung durch unsichtbare Regeln formen. Jedes Werk basiert auf einer Fotografie, die durch einen eigens entwickelten Algorithmus transformiert wird: Über 2.000 Iterationen hinweg verschiebt sich jedes Pixel entlang einer simulierten Logik von Flüssen und Turbulenzen.
Die entstehenden Bilder evozieren erodierte Landschaften und Datenströme. Sie reflektieren, wie das zeitgenössische Bild tiefgreifend von unsichtbaren Strukturen der Kontrolle geprägt ist.
ÜBER DEN KÜNSTLER
Chris Kondek ist ein in Berlin lebender Videokünstler und Regisseur.
Karriereweg: Er begann seine Arbeit in New York bei der The Wooster Group und arbeitete mit Laurie Anderson.
Theater & Oper: Seit 1999 prägt er die europäische Bühne durch Videodesigns für Regisseure wie Falk Richter und Sebastian Baumgarten.
Auszeichnungen: 2012 erhielt er den Faust-Preis für „Quijote: Trip Zwischen Welten“. Zusammen mit Christiane Kühl gründete er das Kollektiv doublelucky productions.
Lehrtätigkeit: Seit 2023 haben Kondek und Kühl eine gemeinsame Gastprofessur an der Universität der Künste Berlin.

PIXEL BY PIXEL: CONTROL, CODE, AND PERCEPTION
The BBA Gallery is proud to announce Pixel Desires, the debut solo gallery exhibition by acclaimed video artist and director Chris Kondek. The exhibition introduces a significant new body of work. It translates Kondek’s career-long investigation into code, control, and digital systems from the stage to the visual arts.
While pixels are the fundamental units of the digital image, they typically remain unnoticed. In Pixel Desires, Kondek transforms them into protagonists, investigating how algorithmic systems shape our perception through invisible rules.
PIXELS AS PROTAGONIST
Each work in the collection begins with a photograph that is subjected to a custom-developed algorithm. Over more than 2,000 iterations, every pixel is shifted according to a simulated logic of flows and turbulences. The resulting images occupy a space between the organic and the artificial, evoking eroded landscapes, the fragility of memory, and the constant movement of data. Pixel Desires reflects on how the contemporary image—though appearing free—is profoundly defined by hidden structures of control.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Chris Kondek is a Berlin-based video artist and director whose work bridges the worlds of media, theater, opera, and digital performance.
International Foundation: Originally from Boston, Kondek began his career in New York with the legendary The Wooster Group and collaborated extensively with Laurie Anderson.
European Career: Since moving to Berlin in 1999, he has created pioneering video designs for major theater and opera houses across Europe. He collaborated with artists such as Meg Stuart, Sebastian Baumgarten, Stefan Pucher, Falk Richter, and Pierre Audi.
Acclaim and Awards: In 2012, he received the Faust Prize. He was honored alongside set designer Barbara Ehenes for “Quijote: Trip Zwischen Welten” at the Thalia Theater. He is also the co-founder of the award-winning performance collective doublelucky productions.
Academic Leadership: Since 2023, Kondek has shared a joint guest professorship at the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK).
