Bei unserer Ausstellungseröffnung von 가닥 – GADAG am vergangenen Sonntag durften wir begeistert hunderte Besucher*innen im Oyoun begrüßen und die intensive, schöne Performance von Min Yoon tr. “Citizen Truth” und zu Ehren der Trostfrauen auf uns wirken lassen. Wer nicht dabei war, hat bis zum 30.04.2024 die Möglichkeit, die unglaublich starken, eindrucksvollen und zeitlosen Arbeiten der ausstellenden Künstler*innen – Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide), Quyên Nguyen-Le, Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai, Yukiko Nagakura zu erleben.
Zusätzlich könnt ihr das umfangreiche Diskursprogramm besuchen, mit dabei sind Filmvorführungen, Storytelling Erlebnisse sowie die Abschlusspräsentation des sechswöchigen Artist Labs, bevor wir Ende April mit GADAG nach Südkorea reisen.

At the exhibition opening of 가닥 – GADAG last Sunday, we were delighted to welcome hundreds of visitors to Oyoun and let the intense, beautiful performance by Min Yoon tr. “Citizen Truth” and in honour of the comfort women sink in. If you missed the vernissage, don’t you worry: the exhibition is on until 30 April, 2024. You therefore have the opportunity to experience the incredibly strong, impressive and timeless works of the exhibiting artists – Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide), Quyên Nguyen-Le, Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai, Yukiko Nagakura. In addition, you can visit the extensive discourse program, including film screenings, storytelling and experiences.

Queer Iftar, Film Screening, and more

Weiterhin hosten wir im und außerhalb von Oyoun diverse Veranstaltungen (s. unten), in Zusammenarbeit mit unseren fünf Fellows sowie Kollektiven, Organisationen und individuelle Personen aus unseren Communities.
Besonders freuen wir uns auf die Pop-Up Konzepte im Café, so findet z.B. ein Queer Iftar am Freitag, den 29.03. bei uns statt.
Ein Tag später, am Samstag, den 30.03., bekommen wir Besuch aus New York, denn Sarah Schulman (Autorin, Historikerin und Professorin) wird im Oyoun den Film “United in Anger – a history of ACT UP” vorstellen und gemeinsam mit Ben Mauk(Autor und Filmemacher) für Fragen und Anregungen zur Verfügung stehen.

We are hosting a number of events in and outside of Oyoun (see below). In collaboration with our five fellows as well as various collectives, organisations and individuals from our communities.
We are particularly looking forward to the pop-up concepts in the café, for example a Queer Iftar on Friday 29 March.
One day later, on Saturday 30 March, we will have a visit from New York, as Sarah Schulman (author, historian and professor) will be presenting the film “United in Anger – a history of ACT UP” at Oyoun and will be available for questions and suggestions together with Ben Mauk (author and filmmaker).

oyoun wins: Justice Has Prevailed

Wir verkünden mit großer Freude, dass wir im Gerichtsverfahren gegen den Tagesspiegel in allen Punkten Recht erhalten haben. Die Entscheidung des Landgerichts Berlin ist ein Triumph für die Glaubwürdigkeit. Sie setzt ein deutliches Signal für die Gefahren, die auf unbegründeten Anschuldigungen basieren.
Das Gericht hat entschieden, dass der Tagesspiegel drei seiner in einem Artikel vom 20.02.2024 geäußerten Behauptungen nicht mehr äußern darf, darunter u.a. die Behauptung über eine Bevorzugung von Oyoun durch den Senat aufgrund familiärer Beziehungen sowie sämtliche Antisemitismusvorwürfe, da diese haltlos sind. Gleiches gilt für die Aussagen der Grünen Politikerin Susanna Kahlefeld, die all’ unsere Unterlassungserklärungen umgehend unterschrieben hat.
Gegen die Verleumdung
Die Entscheidung bestätigt die Integrität von Oyoun und markiert einen wichtigen Sieg gegen Diffamierung. Die Entscheidung betont die Bedeutung eines fairen und unparteiischen Rechtssystems, das die Unschuldsvermutung respektiert und gerechte Urteile fällt.

We are delighted to announce that the Berlin Regional Court has ruled in Oyoun’s favour in the preliminary injunction proceedings against the Tagesspiegel. This decision represents a victory for credibility and sends a clear signal about the dangers based on unfounded allegations.
The court ruled that the Tagesspiegel (newspaper) may no longer publish the claims stated in an article dated 20 February 2024, including the allegation that the Senate favoured Oyoun due to family ties as well as all accusations of anti-Semitism, given these were deemed unfounded. The same applies to the statements made by Green politician Susanna Kahlefeld, who immediately signed all of our cease-and-desist orders.
Against the defamation
This decision confirms the integrity of Oyoun and marks an important victory against defamation. This decision emphasises the importance of a fair and impartial legal system that respects the presumption of innocence and delivers just verdicts.

International Coverage & Ongoing case against Berlin Senate

Wir sind dankbar für die differenzierte Berichterstattung und die internationale Aufmerksamkeit zu den Entwicklungen in Deutschland.
In dem heutigen, von artnet news veröffentlichten, Artikel mit dem Titel “Gericht gibt Berlins Kulturzentrum Recht”werden die Hintergründe differenziert dargestellt und zusammengefasst.
In der ebenfalls heute erschienen Ausgabe des The Face mit dem Titel “Das ist ein deutsches Phänomen: Wie der Israel-Gaza Krieg die Berliner Musik- und Kunstszene erschüttert hat” wird die Instrumentalisierung von Antisemitismusvorwürfen, u.a. im Zusammenhang mit Oyoun, kontextualisiert.
Unterstützt von Indie Medien
Der gestern im The Guardian veröffentlichte Artikel mit dem Titel “Freie Meinungsäußerung ist eine Fassade”: Wie der Gaza-Krieg die Spaltung der deutschen Kunstwelt vertieft hat” berichtet, dass auch die juristischen Gutachten des Berliner Kultursenats zu dem Entschluss kamen, dass “kein antisemitisches Agieren durch Oyoun erkennbar” ist.
Außerdem ergibt sich aus den Akten des Kultursenats, dass es sich im Fall Oyoun selbstverständlich um eine verbindliche, vierjährige Förderzusage bis Ende 2025 handelt.
Das Hauptverfahren gegen den Berliner Kultursenat läuft weiterhin. Im Eilverfahren hat das Oberverwaltungsgericht unsere Beschwerde zurückgewiesen – aufgrund eines vermeintlichen “Formfehlers”. Diese fragwürdige Entscheidung und die Frage, wie es dem deutschen Rechtsstaat geht, darauf fand unsere Rechtsanwältin in der Sache, Myrsini Laaser, die passenden Worte in ihrem Blog Post.
Wir kämpfen weiter, bis zum Ende. Das sind wir nicht nur uns und den Communities schuldig, sondern auch allen anderen Kultur- und Kunstakteur*innen, die gerade den Atem anhalten und um ihre Existenz besorgt sind.

Also today, The Face, published a rather extensive piece “This is a German phenomenon”: how the Israel-Gaza conflict ruptured Berlin’s music and art scene”,where they contextualise the instrumentalisation of anti-Semitism accusations and much more.
The article published yesterday in The Guardian “‘Free speech is a facade’: how Gaza war has deepened divisions in German arts world” reveals that the legal report commissioned by the Berlin senate concluded that “no antisemitic activity on behalf of Oyoun […] is identifiable”.

It was also confirmed that the Cultural Senate came to the conclusion that Oyoun indeed received a legally binding funding agreement until the end of 2025.
The main law case against the Berlin Senate of Culture is still ongoing. In the summary proceedings, the Higher Administrative Court rejected our appeal – due to an alleged “formal error”. Our lawyer in this case, Myrsini Laaser, published a blog post with the right words to this questionable decision and the question of how the German constitutional state is faring.
We will continue to fight to the end. We owe this not only to ourselves and the communities, but also to all other cultural and artistic actors and institutions who are currently holding their breath – in fear and worried about their existence.

Wir freuen uns besonders, dass wir als Kollektiv Oyoun bei der gründlichen Auswahl zu einen der vielen – wenn auch wenigen BIPOC – Kollektive zählen, die gemeinsam und langfristig ab 2026 in das HAUS DER STATISTIK (Plan-Nr. A25) am Alexanderplatz einziehen werden.

Re-imagining Democratic and economic systems in europe

Kürzlich haben wir auf Social Media mitgeteilt, dass wir auch das Fellowship “Changemaker for Democracy 2024”gewonnen haben. Aus über 800 Bewerber*innen wurden 16 Fellows ausgewählt, die mit ihren einfallsreichen Ideen die demokratischen und wirtschaftlichen Systeme verändern und verbessern wollen.
Dieses 12-monatige Stipendium unterstützt in Europa ansässige Akteur*innen und Vertreter*innen von Innovationen, Bewegungen und Kollektiven, die an demokratischer Erneuerung und neuen Wirtschaftsparadigmen arbeiten.
Wir sind dankbar für dieses Fellowship sowie die finanzielle Unterstützung i.H.v. 50.000€ (Grant der Open Society Foundations) und können so die wichtige Arbeit des Oyoun sichern, um weiterhin demokratiefördernde, inklusive und gerechte Initiativen neu zu denken und weiterzuentwickeln.

We recently announced on social media that we just won the “Changemaker for Democracy 2024” fellowship. Out of over 800 applicants, 16 fellows were selected to transform and improve democratic and economic systems with their imaginative ideas.
This 12-month fellowship supports European-based practitioners and representatives of innovations, movements and collectives working on democratic renewal and new economic paradigms.
We are grateful for this fellowship and the financial support of €50,000 (grant from the Open Society Foundations) which allows us to further secure the important work of Oyoun to continue to rethink and develop democracy-promoting, inclusive and just initiatives.
