Die Ausstellung A stage she’s going through bildet den Auftakt des Projektes Becoming B und präsentiert eine Installation von Melanie Jame Wolf, die 2020-21 Stipendiatin im Künstlerhaus Bethanien war. Die Künstlerin erschafft eine Installation aus textilen ‘Thresholds’, aus Schwellen, die das Publikum dazu einladen, sich durch sie hindurch zu bewegen. 

Wie die doppelköpfige Janusfigur aus der römischen Mythologie haben die textilen Skulpturen ein Doppelgesicht.

Es kann jedoch immer nur ein Gesicht betrachtet werden. Das Publikum muss die Schwelle überschreiten, um das andere zu sehen. In Zeiten einer zunehmend gespaltenen Gesellschaft fordern uns diese Skulpturen dazu auf, über die Bedeutung der eigenen Positionierung nachzudenken. Gleichzeitig zeigt sich darin, dass die Art und Weise, wie wir uns in der Welt inszenieren, sowohl spielerisch als auch folgenreich sein kann. 

Räumlich greift Melanie Jame Wolf in ihren Skulpturen Formen des Proszeniums auf, des dekorativen Bogens, der oft traditionelle Theaterbühnen rahmt, und bezieht sich dabei auf ihre Erfahrungen in der darstellenden Kunst. Die Ausstellung gibt Raum zur Kontemplation, gibt den Gefühlen der Ungewissheit eine Bühne. Am Eröffnungsabend wird sie zur performativen Bühne: Gemeinsam mit Ania Nowak und MINQ zeigt Melanie Jame Wolf die Performance Janus! Janus! Door! Door!.

Die Kuratorinnen Kira Dell und Laura Seidel zeigten bereits 2024 Arbeiten von Melanie Jame Wolf in ihrem Projektraum Neun Kelche und führen nun die Kollaboration auf Einladung der künstlerischen Leiterin des Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Antje Weitzel, fort: Für die Ausstellung erarbeiten sie den gemeinsamen Text A Staircase. A Threshold. A Door., der bei einer Leseprobe vorgestellt wird. Eine Lesung von Fatma Aydemir aus ihrem Roman Dschinns mit einem Fokus auf Schwellenzustände rundet das Programm ab. Im Anschluss folgt ein Gespräch mit der Künstlerin und den Kuratorinnen.

The exhibition A stage she’s going through marks the beginning of the project Becoming B and presents an installation by Melanie Jame Wolf, who herself was a fellow at Künstlerhaus Bethanien in 2020-21. The artist creates an installation of textile Thresholds that invite the public to move through them. 

Like the double-headed Janus figure from Roman mythology, the textile sculptures are double-faced. Yet only one face can be viewed at a time, one must chance crossing the Threshold to see the other. In times of an increasingly divided society, these sculptures challenge us to consider the importance of positioning ourselves, that how we stage ourselves in the world is both playful and consequential. 

Spatially, Melanie Jame Wolf creates proscenium forms, drawing from her experience in performance, referring to the decorative arches that often frame traditional theatre stages. The exhibition provides space for contemplation and gives a stage to feelings of uncertainty. On the opening evening it becomes a performative stage: Together with Ania Nowak and MINQ, Melanie Jame Wolf will present the performance Janus! Janus! Door! Door!.

The curators Kira Dell and Laura Seidel previously showed works by Melanie Jame Wolf in their project space Neun Kelche in 2024. They are now continuing this collaboration at the invitation of Antje Weitzel, the artistic director of Künstlerhaus Bethanien.

For the exhibition, they are creating the joint text A Staircase. A Threshold. A Door, which will be presented at a table read. A reading by Fatma Aydemir from her novel Djinns with a focus on threshold states will round off the program. The reading will be followed by a talk with the artist and the curators.
