Toyen was a fascinating character who deserves a second, more detailed, look. The artist was born Marie Čermínová in Prague, then within the Austro-Hungarian empire in 1902. She left the family home at sixteen (some have said because of her communist or anarchist sympathies) and for a while lived with her older sister.
