New Podcast Unbound – On Performance and Video Art

The Essence of Performance

In der ersten Folge von Unbound sprechen die Moderatorinnen Line Ajan und Lisa Long über die Themen der Ausstellung „Unbound: Performance as Rupture“, und diskutieren mit Peggy Phelan über ihre bis heute einflussreiche Perfomance-Definition in „Unmarked. The Politics of Performance” (1993). Phelan beleuchtet die ethischen und politischen Dimensionen von Performance und schreibt darüber, wie die Dokumentation und Reproduktion von performativen Praktiken deren Wesen verändert – Themen, die auch im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung stehen.

Außerdem hören wir in dieser Ausgabe ein für den Podcast aufgenommenes Gespräch mit dem Künstler peter campus, dessen Video Three Transitions von 1973 am Anfang der Ausstellung stand. Abschließend kommentiert die Journalistin Marilena Borriello die Themen dieser Folge. Ausschnitte aus Pipilotti Rists Videoarbeit (Entlastungen) Pipislottis Fehler (1988), ebenfalls Teil der Ausstellung, lassen die von Phelan erwähnte störende Kraft der Performance anklingen.

Unbound is a podcast mini-series extending upon the exhibition “Unbound: Performance as Rupture.” Join us on this audio journey hosted by the exhibition’s curators Line Ajan and Lisa Long to discover the thought-provoking theories, stories, and artworks instrumental to the histories of performance and video at large. The podcast offers a comprehensive look at the intersection of image technologies and performance art from the late 1960s to today, and how artists have used their bodies in relation to the camera to signify different ruptures.

The Essence of Performance

In the inaugural episode titled The Essence of Performance, hosts Line Ajan and Lisa Long have an introductory conversation about the exhibition “Unbound: Performance as Rupture”, followed by an interview with performance scholar Peggy Phelan about the influential definition of performance delineated in her 1993 seminal book Unmarked. The Politics of Performance. Phelan sheds light on the ethical and political dimensions of performance, and how the documentation and reproduction of performative practices shifts their essence––themes that are also central to the exhibition.

This illuminating conversation with Phelan is interspersed with excerpts from another conversation we had with artist peter campus, whose 1973 video Three Transitions is the first artwork encountered by visitors of the exhibition. We end with comments sent to us by journalist Marilena Borriello. Sonic excerpts from Pipilotti Rist’s 1988 video (Entlastungen) Pipilottis Fehler (1988), also on view in the show, resonate with the disruptive power of performance mentioned by Phelan.
