Sommerprogramm 2023
Das KW Institute for Contemporary Art freut sich, ihr Sommerprogramm 2023 zu präsentieren, das sich auch in der Folge mit dem Selbst und dessen Darstellung beschäftigen wird. Dies manifestiert sich zum einen in den Skulpturen von Enrico David, der die Autonomie des Körpers in seinen verschiedenen Stadien von Nicht-Sein und Werden kritisch herausarbeitet, sowie in den Arbeiten von Emily Wardill und Hervé Guibert, die auf ihre Weise erforschen, was jenseits der Erfassung eines Bildes liegt.

Die Ausstellung ist die erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung des Künstlers Enrico David (*1966, IT) in Deutschland und widmet sich ausschließlich seiner bildhauerischen Praxis.
David arbeitet vorranging mit Bildhauerei, Malerei, Textilien und Installation, erkundet das Formale aber auch in Zeichnungen. In seinen Arbeiten lotet er den Raum zwischen Figuration und Abstraktion aus, wobei er den Körper immer wieder zum Ausgangspunkt macht und die menschliche Figur als Metapher für Transformation untersucht. Die Skulpturen des Künstlers zeugen vom Bemühen um eine Annäherung von Selbst und Bild und unternehmen eine kritische Befragung der körperlichen Autonomie mit Blick auf die verschiedenen Stadien des Nicht-Seins und des becoming („des Werdens“).
In der Haupthalle der KW und im Erdgeschoss werden Davids Skulpturen in Analogie zu dieser Vorstellung des Nicht-Seins in einer räumlichen Anordnung ohne Wände präsentiert. So wird ein stiller Nicht-Raum inszeniert – eine Zeit ohne Gegenwart, ein Raum des Wartens und der Spannung. Davids anthropomorphe Skulpturen muten wie aus dem Sein herausgefallen an, als befänden sie sich in einem ständigen Modus performativer Verwandlung. In punktuellen Konfrontationen treffen sie auf die Betrachtenden, gefangen in einem Kampf um den Schein des Absoluten.

Im Rahmen der KW Production Series 2023 präsentiert die Künstlerin Emily Wardill (*1977, GB) die immersive Bewegtbildinstallation Identical. In dieser neuen Auftragsarbeit vertieft sie ihre kontinuierliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem „imaginierten Bild“: Worum handelt es sich dabei, wofür wird es verwendet, und welche Spuren hinterlässt es? Beharrlich umkreist Wardill diese Fragen bereits in ihrem Frühwerk, das die Glasmalerei als historisches Mittel der Kommunikation mit Analphabet*innen aufgreift, aber auch in ihrer neueren Arbeit, die das filmische Day-for-Night-Verfahren umkehrt, um über technologisch vermitteltes Sehen, Genderperformance und Utopien nachzudenken.
Wardills neue Installation in den KW lehnt sich ästhetisch an das Expanded Cinema an, einer in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren von Künstler*innen entwickelten multimedialen Form. Sie setzt sich darin mit dem Imaginären der „Expansion“ auseinander, und zwar in Verbindung mit dem individuellen Bewusstsein und im Kontext territorialen Wirtschaftswachstums und Herrschaftsstrebens.
Identical verteilt die Aufmerksamkeit des Publikums auf zwei Videobildschirme, auf denen die Bilder im Loop laufen, sich teilen und ineinander übergehen. Die Arbeit nimmt Bezug auf ikonische Filmmomente sexueller Lust oder körperlicher Gewalt und reflektiert über den artifiziellen Charakter dieser hemmungslosen Szenen, indem für deren Rekonstruktion die Perspektive von Kindern und aufblasbaren Automata – maschinellen Figuren – eingenommen wird. Entlang eines zentral platzierten Kanals läuft der begleitende Soundtrack durch den Ausstellungsraum. Darin trifft das von einem achtköpfigen Chor vorgetragene Stück (der Aufbau des Refrains entspricht der Fibonacci-Folge) auf gesampelte Tracks, Coversongs und Überlegungen zur „Aufspaltung“ – sowohl im Sinne von Doppelzüngigkeit als auch in Bezug auf die zelluläre Entwicklung von Leben.
Durch sein Hin und Her und Ineinander konfrontiert Identical das Publikum mit einer Reihe von Fragen. Wer hat Vergnügen mit Herrschaft verwoben und warum? Wann verwandelt sich der Reim in Vernunft? Wie austauschbar sind Komödie und Tragödie? Vor dem Hintergrund dualer Betrachtungsweisen macht sich Identical daran, einen alternativen Raum zu kartieren: eine polyphone Erfahrung, die sich binären Zuordnungen entzieht.

In dieser Einzelausstellung wird eine Auswahl an Fotografien des verstorbenen französischen Künstlers, Schriftstellers und Aktivisten Hervé Guibert (*1955, FR – †1991, FR) präsentiert. Die Ausstellung untersucht Aspekte, die außerhalb der fotografischen Momentaufnahmen liegen.
Guibert ist vor allem für seine Porträts bekannt, fotografierte aber auch Interieurs, Objekte und leere Räume – ein wichtiger, noch vergleichsweise unbekannter Teil seines Werks. Auf lakonische und subtile Weise ermöglichen diese Fotografien eine Art des Porträts, bei dem es darauf ankommt, was nicht auf dem Bild zu sehen ist. Die mit Liebe und Traumata aufgeladenen Innenräume laden zu fantasievollen Lesarten der Geschichten jener Menschen ein, die darin leben oder einst gelebt haben. Die Fotografien offenbaren intime Einblicke in das Leben des Künstlers und wahren gleichzeitig das Private, indem sie die Protagonist*innen in sicherer (oder tragischer) Distanz außerhalb der Bildränder halten.
Anstatt ein Gefühl von Objektivität oder „Wahrheit“ zu vermitteln, verweist die Ausstellung auf all das, was in Fotografien unsichtbar bleibt: Erinnerungen, Anekdoten, Abwesenheiten und die Vielschichtigkeit des Subjektiven. Guiberts Bilder von Objekten und privaten Räumen sind durchdrungen von der geisterhaften Abwesenheit derer, die sie einst bewohnten und zurückließen. In diesem Sinne befasst sich die Ausstellung mit jenen „Wahrheiten“, die in einer Fotografie schlummern – unsichtbar für unser Auge und doch ganz wesentlich für die Abbildung sind. Sie schlägt Bilder über das vor, was auf den Bildern fehlt.
Die Ausstellung wird vom CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco organisiert. Besonderer Dank gilt Christine Guibert und Françoise Morin von der Galerie Les Douches sowie Photi Giovanis von Callicoon Fine Arts.

Summmer Program 2023
The KW Institute for Contemporary Art is pleased to present its Summer Program of 2023, which continues to investigate theself and its representation. This is exemplified by the sculptures of Enrico David, who critically elaborates on the body’s autonomy through its different stages of non-being and becoming, as well as by the work of Emily Wardill and Hervé Guibert, who each explore what lies beyond the grasp of an image.

Destroyed Men Come and Go

The exhibition will mark Enrico David’s (b.1966, IT) first institutional solo exhibition in Germany and will be devoted solely to his sculptural practice.
David works with sculpture, painting, textiles, and installation, while drawing is also central to his exploration of form. Mining a space between figuration and abstraction, he consistently returns to the body as a point of departure, exploring the human figure as a metaphor for transformation. Conveying the struggle of adaptation of the self and the image, Enrico David’s sculptures critically elaborate on the body’s autonomy through its different stages of non-being and becoming.
In KW’s main hall and on the ground floor, the sculptures will be exhibited in a spatial arrangement without walls, touching upon the concept of nothingness, and setting the scene for a silent non-space; a time without a present, a space of waiting and suspense. Having fallen out of being and caught in a constant mode of performative transformation, the artists anthropomorphic sculptures are punctual confrontations between themselves and their onlooker, caught in a struggle to appear as absolutes.

For the 2023 KW Production Series, artist Emily Wardill (b. 1977, GB) presents Identical, an immersive moving image installation. This new commission deepens the artist’s ongoing enquiry into the ‘imagined image’—what it is, what it has been used for, and what traces it leaves behind. Wardill’s practice insistently approaches such questions, from her earliest work that looked at stained glass as an early device to communicate with the illiterate, to her recent work that reverses the cinematic technique of ‚day for night‘ simulation in order to reflect upon technological vision, performed gender and utopias.
Wardill’s new installation draws aesthetic inspiration from ‘expanded cinema’—a multimedia form developed by artists in the 1960s and 1970s—while also engaging with the imaginary of ‘expansion’ as it relates to individual consciousness, and to territorial economic growth and domination.
Identical splits the audience’s attention across two video screens whose images loop, split and fold into one another. With reference to iconic cinematic moments of sexual pleasure and physical violence, Identical reflects on the manufactured nature of these moments of abandon, lensing their reconstruction through children and inflatable automata. The accompanying soundtrack runs up and down a central channel in the gallery, weaving an eight-piece choir (whose chorus builds in a Fibonacci pattern) together with sampled tracks, cover songs, and ruminations on ‘splitting’ both as duplicitous and the genesis of life on a cellular level.
In its switching and merging, Identical asks the audience to consider who wove pleasure into domination and why, where does rhyme become reason, and what is the shifting relationship between comedy and tragedy. Amid such binaries, Identical begins to articulate a different space: a polyphonic experience that refuses to become one thing or the other.

This solo exhibition features a selection of photographs by the late French artist, writer, and activist Hervé Guibert (b. 1955, FR, d. 1991, FR). The exhibition explores what lies beyond the grasp of photography.
Better known for his portraits, Guibert also photographed interiors, inanimate objects, and empty rooms—an important body of work that remains relatively unknown. Laconic and reserved, these photographs offer an approach to portraiture where what is missing from the image is what counts. Charged with love as well as with trauma, these interior spaces invite imaginative readings of the people who belong or once belonged there. His photographs lay open the artist’s most intimate spaces while also maintaining the secrecy of private moments, with the protagonists kept safely (or tragically) out of the frame or at a distance.
Instead of providing a sense of objectivity or ‘truth’, this exhibition points to all that is invisible in a photograph: memories, anecdotes, absences, and richly layered subjectivities. Guibert’s photographs of objects and domestic spaces are replete with the ghostly absence of those who once inhabited them and left them behind. In that sense, this exhibition considers the ‘truths’ that lie dormant within a photograph, invisible to the eye and yet central to the image. It proposes images about what is absent from images.
