    Q & A Marie Louise Elshout: Hybrids Between Human and Nature

    From printmaking to hybrid creatures, my art blends drawing and painting, exploring human nature, folklore, and the awe of our natural world.

    Marie Louise Elshout’s works will be on view from November 7, 2025, as part of the exhibition Dreams of the Seen and Unseen at janinebeangallery, Berlin.
    The viewers are invited into a world where the boundaries between human and animal, reality and imagination, dissolve. In this Q&A, Elshout discusses her artistic journey, the evolution of her practice, and the themes that permeate her work.

    Can you tell us about your path into art? How did drawing and painting become the core of your practice?

    I studied at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam as a printmaker. After my graduation I started with photography and film as an experiment, as I wanted to explore all aspects of the art world. I did performances with great musicians where I would sing and project my movie in the background.

    I also worked as an actress many times. But after a while I got bored waiting for the moment and rather wanted to make movies myself. After another film and performance project which cost a lot of money. I ran out of funding and I started to miss my autonomous art, the manual craft of it. 

    You work in both drawing and painting, blending the two seamlessly. How did this authentic connection between the mediums develop for you?

    Originally, I am a printmaker, it’s more linear, which I am good at. I am not a painter but I always wanted to be one – at the academy it frustrated me. I had a photography exhibition in Amsterdam in 2001, titled „Stillleben Tote Hand, könnte ich nur Malen“, talking about Romanticism…

    In 2005 I finally took the plunge and just started to work on canvas with drawing, it felt liberating. While others took me for a fool since my photography projects were very successful at the time and painting ‘was old fashioned’ and ‘not done anymore’ in the art world. 

    On closer inspection my images are built up from hundreds of pencil lines and charcoal shades. I loose myself in this process, drawn from my subconsciousness. When I feel I can no longer continue this process I start the transparent oil layering for more depth and add colour, which is much more a technical phase and since it’s on canvas people call them paintings but they are actual drawings. 

    Your works explore the ambivalent relationship between humans and animals. What drew you to these dynamics?

    It’s a concept that has developed during the years. I get a lot of inspiration from movies, (David Lynch, Cronenberg, etc.), music (PJ Harvey, 16 Horsepower, etc.) as well as literature (Steinbeck, Ian McEwan, etc.). 

    It’s typical how humans behave, we always feel so superior to all other living beings around us, but essentially we are a mere glimpse in history on this planet, we are stardust – just what Joni sang… 

    Why do you often situate your hybrid creatures in 19th-century historical settings inspired by daguerreotypes?

    In my last year at the Willem de Kooning Academy I got the opportunity to do my semester in Baltimore at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

    I didn’t attend much classes since I was much more fascinated by the people and the surrounding itself, it is such a beautiful country but holds such a dark history. 

    I feel the 19th century is such an inspirational era: all these industrial developments but also the last strings to the old world. 

    Starting point for my paintings are these daguerreotypes, found on an online library based on pioneers, all nationalities who came to America, the promised land. 

    The landscape in your work is not just background, but often a protagonist. What role does landscape play in your narratives?

    Nature is what makes us, it tolerates us human beings, I am in great awe of our beautiful planet earth and all it’s splendor and I want to show that as often as I can. 

    Your creatures are not anthropomorphic in the usual sense. Instead, you draw on folklore, superstition, fairy tales, and traditions. What fascinates you about these sources?

    I am fascinated by the way human beings act, so learning about folklore is part of that, all tribes and populations have their own rituals, traditions and believes.

    Fairytales are a different subject, they deal with the subconscious and secret desires.

    Do you see your hybrid beings as mirrors for human society? Or more as independent entities with their own symbolic life?

    I guess both. I want to draw attention with them but they also have their own presence and beauty. They are about transformation, you never know if you’re watching a human being dressed up with a mask or a primate wearing a dress. It’s the ambivalence that makes it interesting.

    They also portray a journey through the subconscious, which I think is essential these days. People are connected with the outside world 24/7 which often leads to disconnection and emptiness.

    Your works invite viewers to reflect on their relationship to nature. Do you see art as a tool to awaken ecological or social awareness?

    Artists are the mirror to society. I believe it’s an artist’s obligation to create awareness. Too bad nowadays with all the renewed prudery a lot is censored these days.

    I am very disappointed that our present world is still ruled by narcissistic world leaders and genocide is happening all over again. Don’t get me wrong I am a very positive, optimistic person but we humans never seem to learn. But behind every cloud there is a neon lining. 

    What can visitors in Berlin expect to discover in your works in the exhibition at janinebeangallery?

    The gallery has had a great foreseeing in showing the paintings of James Johnston and mine in a duo show, I admire him as a musician and an artist. 

    I think our paintings resonate, they take you by the hand and guide you through a mythical world. I hope visitors will take their time to really explore our works and enjoy the journey.

    SAVE THE DATE: ISOLA DUBAI DESIGN WEEK 4—9 NOV 2025

    Isola Design Group debuts Isola Space at The Lana Promenade during Dubai Design Week 2025 — a new creative landmark for global design.

    On the occasion of Dubai Design Week 2025 (4—9 November 2025), Isola Design Group unveils Isola Space, its first physical venue and a new landmark for the international design community. Isola Space is located at The Lana Promenade, Dorchester Collection, Marasi Bay. It is just minutes from the Dubai Design District. Isola Space functions as an exhibition gallery, design store, café, workspace area, and an event venue.

    The opening of Isola Space is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4th, 2025. There will be aperitivo bites and signature mixology by The Art of Hosting. Untitled 1C will feature a live performance (at 6 pm / 7 pm / 8 pm) by Tellurico Design Studio. They will carve raw wooden blocks to reveal the labour behind the making of a collectible design object. Additionally, there will be a contemporary dance performance by Wolke7-stageworks.

    To inaugurate the space, Isola presents the group exhibition “Icons of Tomorrow”, alongside two additional shows in the Dubai Design District — “Heart, Head, Hand” at Double J Collective and “Living Forms” at Sevil Dolmacı Gallery. 

    ICONS OF TOMORROW

    Isola Space hosts Icons of Tomorrow, a group exhibition featuring a curated selection of products, research, and experiments by designers who are shaping the future of contemporary design.

    Epoche Studio creates a side table made from a fossil framed in cast aluminum. It merges an artifact once in motion with the stillness of cast metal. Jinil Park’s Drawing Series presents a chair, lamp, and side table that transform 2D sketches into real-world forms. Aina Kari + Giovanni Botticelli Studio celebrate Venetian tradition with eclectic handmade glass vases and candleholders. Studio Szkło plays with light and form in glasses. These glasses bend reality. Moreover featured in the outdoor area, a lounge installation with seats by Alkimista and cylindrical handmade planters by Pots and Pines.

    HEART, HEAD, HAND

    Double J Collective, Building 7A at Dubai Design District
    November 4 — 9, 2025; h 11 am – 8 pm 

    Curated together with Double J Collective, Heart, Head, Hand explores the emotional, intellectual, and tactile dimensions of the creative process. The exhibition celebrates the deep connection between people and the objects around them, showing how handmade design can bring meaning, evoke memories, and create personal connections.

    From Studio Lilium’s table lamp incorporating cocoa particles as a sensory experiment, to emotional handmade vases inspired by volcanoes. Versatile boxes by Aleksandra Hyz are designed to hold anything and act as social catalysts for interaction. Each project explores new ways of connecting material, emotion, and meaning. Double J Collective is the first gallery in the UAE exclusively dedicated to contemporary craftsmanship.

    LIVING FORMS

    Sevil Dolmacı, Building 11 at Dubai Design District
    November 4 — 9, 2025; h 10 am – 7 pm

    Isola collaborates with Sevil Dolmacı to present Living Forms that showcases furniture and design objects that transcend mere functionality, highlighting culture, craftsmanship, and personal expression.

    Rory Noble-Turner’s sculptural piece evolves from a chess figure into pure decor. Behnaz Pourfarhadi’s chair is inspired by the Iranian Zurkhaneh. Cultural heritage shapes the very foundation of its design. Marquisate celebrates craftsmanship with egg-shaped glasses that recall fertility. This brings timeless artistry into the present. Hasik Design Studio’s table lamps embody a sense of permanence. They are objects meant to be passed down through generations.

    Heterotopia.exe – Group Exhibit at the Garten_Studios

    Heterotopia.exe is an eclectic group exhibition on Michel Foucault’s theory of Heterotopic Spaces and “worlds within worlds”.

    The third space exists as a site of possibility. It is a threshold where contradictions are not erased but embraced. These spaces, described by Michel Foucault as heterotopias, are worlds within worlds, alternate realities suspended in tension with the normative. They are other, real-yet-unreal, and following a specific set of rules, like bars, prisons, nightclubs, or this exhibition space right here.

    The need for third spaces arises from the failures of traditional structures to accommodate the complexity of human existence. Public spaces are shrinking under privatization. Digital platforms are increasingly mediating our interactions. The creation of new third spaces offers a counterpoint. 

    Heterotopia.exe unfolds as an activation and simulation of Foucault’s concept of “other spaces”, and opens it not as a static notion, but as an executable environment. In this exhibition, artworks are not only representations but portals, where reality is reprogrammed.

    Here, you will discover installations with aesthetics drawn from video games. These include coded landscapes populated by 3D-printed hybrid creatures. They hover between biology and imagination. Visitors will also find uncanny beings made of glass and steel. They are half deep-sea, half interplanetary, suggesting lives evolving in environments we can barely imagine.

    The exhibition is a walk through of fragments and reveries. Otherworldly landscapes draw colors and shapes obey unfamiliar laws, with distorted gardens and curated domestic interiors. Dreamscapes collide with visions of post-internet Hells. The viewer will encounter allegories for the infrastructures of control that we navigate daily and the invisible labor of care. Mirrors serve as paradoxical heterotopias, offering presence and absence at once.

    The exhibition space is its own a world. It mirrors our contemporary art practices, questions and opens the space for dialogue, holds together universes that may otherwise seem incompatible. A space with its own temporality, suspending time for the short period the exhibition is on display and crystallizes in memories and through documentation. 

    About the curator: 

    Louise des Places is a curator, arts journalist, and former studio manager and gallery director. Over the years she has worked in several art residencies, foundations, museums and galleries in France, Belgium, Germany and Sweden; wrote for numerous publications; and organized curated exhibitions all around Europe as an independent curator.

    Mit der Ausstellung „Dreams of the Seen and Unseen“ präsentiert die janinebeangallery ab dem 7. November 2025 eine Gegenüberstellung der künstlerischen Positionen von Marie Louise Elshout und James Johnston.

    Marie Louise Elshout

    Die niederländische Künstlerin Marie Louise Elshout (geb. 1967 in Delft, Niederlande) verbindet in ihrem Werk Zeichnung und Malerei auf einzigartige Weise. Ihre Arbeiten stammen ursprünglich aus der Druckgrafik. Sie entstehen aus hunderten fein gesetzten Bleistift- und Kohlestiftlinien. Diese Linien verdichten sich durch transparente Ölschichten zu farbigen Bildwelten.

    „Auf den ersten Blick wirken sie wie Gemälde, doch eigentlich sind es gezeichnete Kompositionen“, beschreibt Elshout ihren Prozess. Inhaltlich bewegt sich ihr Werk im Spannungsfeld zwischen Mensch und Tier, Führenden und Folgenden, Maskerade und Verwandlung. Inspiriert von Daguerreotypien des 19. Jahrhunderts greift Elshout historische Bildräume auf, in denen industrielle Modernisierung und alte Mythen noch nebeneinander existierten.

    Ihre hybriden Gestalten reflektieren Folklore, Märchen sowie Rituale und damit zugleich die Ambivalenz menschlicher Gesellschaft. Die Landschaft fungiert dabei nicht als Hintergrund, sondern als handelnder Protagonist, der die fragile Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Natur hervorhebt. „Wir sind nur Sternenstaub, wie Joni sang“, sagt Elshout, „und doch verhalten wir uns, als stünden wir über allen anderen Lebewesen.“ 

    James Johnston

    Johnston (geb. 1966) ist einem internationalen Publikum vor allem als Musiker bekannt als Gründer und Sänger der Band Gallon Drunk. Sowie durch seine langjährige Zusammenarbeit mit Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds und PJ Harvey. Während einer Tour mit PJ Harvey begann er, täglich kleine Bilder in Hotelzimmern anzufertigen. Dies läutete den Beginn seiner zweiten künstlerischen Laufbahn ein.

    „Unmittelbar wurde ich davon gänzlich in den Bann gezogen“, erinnert sich Johnston, „ich musste weitermachen und zurück in London brauchte ich sofort ein Atelier.“ Aus dieser anfänglich spontanen Praxis entwickelte sich eine Bildsprache. Diese Bildsprache zeichnet sich durch expressive Direktheit, kräftige Farben und figurative Intensität aus.

    Johnstons Arbeiten entstehen oft aus dem Zufall heraus. Sie entwickeln sich zu Szenen mit solitären Figuren, Tieren und Naturdarstellungen. Diese Szenen widerspiegeln den menschlichen Zustand. Humor ist für ihn dabei ebenso ein Zugang wie die mythische Aufladung, die auch von außen erkannt werden kann.

    Nick Cave beschrieb Johnstons Arbeiten als „paintings full of mythic power“. Damit betont er den archaischen und zugleich psychologisch dichten Charakter seiner Malerei. Der Künstler selbst sieht Malerei und Musik als Ausdruck derselben Energie. „Ich bin kein technischer Musiker. Es ging mir immer um Unmittelbarkeit und Herzblut. Das gilt für die Malerei genauso.“

    Für die Ausstellung in Berlin kündigt Johnston „lose, farbenfrohe, figurative Gemälde“ an. Darunter sind auch kleinere Formate, die er besonders schätzt. „Sie sind sehr konzentriert und haben eine Kraft ganz für sich.“ 

    Verborgenes, Traum und Realität, Geschichte und Gegenwart

    Im Zusammenspiel mit den Werken von Marie Louise Elshout entsteht ein intensiver Dialog. Elshout reflektiert mit präziser Zeichnung, historischen Anspielungen und mythisch aufgeladenen Hybridwesen kollektive Rituale. Sie beleuchtet die fragile Beziehung zur Natur. Johnston verdichtet existentielle Stimmungen zu expressiven figurativen Szenen. In diesen Szenen trifft das Mythische auf die Gegenwart. 

    „Dreams of the Seen and Unseen“ zeigt zwei künstlerische Positionen. Diese verweben Sichtbares und Verborgenes, Traum und Realität sowie Geschichte und Gegenwart. Die Ausstellung lädt ein, in diese Zwischenwelten einzutreten.

    Aftersome LP by You Man feat. Marc Almond and Local Suicide

    Aftersome by You Man captures the fleeting moments where chance meets destiny — a hypnotic journey through techno, house and post-wave sounds.

    Aftersome refers to that suspended moment of wonder, when you realize you’ve been led here by a chain of unexpected events and small decisions — so improbable they almost feel preordained. Between chance and destiny, it is a fragile state where emotion and reflection intertwine.

    This album by You Man (Tepat & Giac) embodies precisely that idea. Each track is a step along this path. It is a resonance born of accidents and coincidences. These elements ultimately shape a coherent trajectory despite its improbability.

    Musically, the work moves between techno, house and post-wave, infused with science-fiction and fantastical influences, constantly blurring the line between reality and imagination.

    Ultimately, Aftersome is a hypnotic journey, a sonic mosaic reflecting the unpredictable beauty of the paths that emerge as we move forward.

    About You Man

    You Man is a French electronic duo. Tepat Huleux and Giac Di Falco form this group. They have been crafting hypnotic dance music since 2005. They met in Calais, France, bonding over their shared love for electronic music and frequenting legendary parties across the Belgian border.

    Their debut EP, Restless, released in 2013, marked the beginning of their journey in the electronic music scene. The duo’s sound blends elements of techno, house, and post-wave, often infused with science-fiction and fantastical influences, creating a unique auditory experience.

    You Man has released several acclaimed works over the years. This includes the Altered States EP in 2020. It drew inspiration from Aldous Huxley’s The Doors of Perception. Their music is characterized by captivating synth loops, progressive rhythms, and a blend of light and dark elements. They have performed at notable festivals. These include We Love Green, Calvi On The Rocks, and Solidays.

    In celebration of their decade-long journey, You Man revisited their debut EP in 2024. They collaborated with artists like Etienne de Crécy and Des Jonquilles. This reimagined version of Restless offers fresh interpretations of their classic tracks, blending their early sound with new influences.

    Wiener Planquadrat & Chuck Winter – L’Amour Á Trois / Wurm

    Wiener Planquadrat & Chuck Winter explore passion and chaos in their new Austropop single “L’Amour À Trois” — out Oct 24 via Iptamenos Discos.

    Wiener Planquadrat team up with Chuck Winter to release their new Austropop hit “L’Amour Á Trois” on October 24th, 2025 via Iptamenos Discos.

    Wiener Planquadrat is a Vienna-based duo consisting of Michael Weiler and Maximilian Atteneder. They made their mark in 2021 with “Stillstand.” This breakout debut climbed the dance charts in Austria and Germany. Their 2022 EP “Dschungel”, featuring remixes by T.Raumschmiere and Tech Support, blended analog grit with indie-rave melancholy, signaling their refusal to play by genre rules.

    In recent years, they’ve performed live in Berlin, Paris, and Thessaloniki, collaborated with Local Suicide and released remixes for artists like Oberst & Buchner, Dina Summer, Kalipo, and more.

    Munich-raised, Vienna-based Chuck Winter lost all his music in 2020 when his computer crashed, using the moment to start over. Formerly, he was an English-language indie artist. He reinvented himself as NNDW (Neue Neue Deutsche Welle). He began writing and singing in German for the first time. A new sound emerged from pandemic isolation. It led to his 2022 debut EP “Geist.” He toured across the German-speaking world with acts like Mola, Die Sauna, and Das Kitsch.

    Their first collaborative single “L’Amour À Trois” dives deep into the pleasures and pains of a romantic ménage à trois. It explores masochistic self-destruction and tender ecstasy, alone or together.

    The single will be released digitally and on a limited 7” vinyl, featuring the B-side “Wurm”, on November 14th, 2025 via Iptamenos Discos. The release will be celebrated with a release event at Import Export in Munich on November 15th, 2025.

    New EP: The MFA – The Difference it Makes Remixes

    A timeless classic reborn — The Difference It Makes returns with remixes by Joe Goddard, Nathan Fake & The MFA, out Oct 28 on Deskbound Complex.

    Original MFA Mix:

    One of Pitchfork’s top 50 tracks of 2004, Resident Advisor described it at the time as, “Beautiful slices of dubby-tech house with compressed guitars and abstract sliced vocals. From start to finish, the track is minimal in nature. I like it, and I think you will too… The MFA has created something of a hidden gem.”

    The record went on to receive support from Gerd Janson, Carl Cox, BLOND:ISH, Sven Väth, James Holden, Michael Mayer, Tim Sweeney, Dusky, Ata, Joseph Capriati, Robag Wruhme, Henry Saiz, Nick Warren, Hernan Cattaneo, Jody Wisternoff, James Grant, Joe Goddard, and more.

    Joe Goddard Remix:

    With plenty of plays from Grammy-nominated Joe Goddard of Hot Chip, it seemed only right to ask him to remix the track. The result is an electro-dance number with a big breakdown and main room appeal.

    Nathan Fake Remix:

    Originally released on James Holden’s Border Community, The MFA pay homage with a remix by former labelmate, Nathan Fake – who the duo first met on an internet chat room at the turn of the millennium.

    The MFA’s #23 Remix:

    Reimagined 23 years after it was first written (with a nod to The KLF), the remix pushes the track deeper onto the dancefloor, with a fresh take on the original.

    About Deskbound Complex and The MFA:

    Deskbound Complex was launched in 2025 by The MFA’s Alastair Douglas and Rhys Evans, with Euge Rasini joining as label manager, and Amilcar Torija as creative director.

    The long-term vision is for Deskbound Complex to provide a platform for new and established artists to share, collaborate, and release records through.

    Following their debut release on Border Community in 2004, The MFA went on to release tracks on Bpitch Control, Kompakt, Boxer, EQ, and Precinct records. After a break, the pair returned in 2021 with a release on Traum, and fresh material planned for release in 2026.
